Off Brigstock Road, this central green space has a few roadside parking spots nearby—perfect if you’re pulling over for a quick break. We visited during a local light show and found it buzzing with food stalls and warm cider stands. Open 24/7, it’s easy to reach and easier still to spend time in.

Grangewood Park

Drivers can follow Ross Road and usually find parking on the perimeter. Inside, it’s all shady paths, large trees and the kind of space that feels far from traffic. It’s open daily from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm and works well for a morning dog walk or a breather from driving.

Norbury Hall Park

Tucked behind residential streets, this one’s a bit harder to spot from the road—we nearly missed the turnoff from Craignish Avenue. That said, it’s a rewarding stop for a short walk or a quiet coffee break in the car. There’s limited parking but enough if you’re quick.

Thornton Heath Clock Tower

If you’re driving through the town centre, you’ll spot the clock tower on Parchmore Road—a useful landmark if you’re navigating by car. We used it as a marker while circling for a café stop and found its surroundings to be a hub of local life, with parking on nearby side roads.

Thornton Heath Recreation Ground

Ideal for families travelling by car, this park on Winterbourne Road has nearby on-street parking and a lot to offer: basketball courts, an outdoor gym and a secure children’s play area. We dropped in after arriving from Mitcham and found the atmosphere easy-going and neighbourly.

Norbury Park

Parking’s a bit tighter here but worth it if you’re looking for a quieter green route. This repurposed railway line now offers a peaceful path through the edge of town. We came in from Wallington and used it as a wind-down walk after being on the road.

We made time to stop here en route to Sutton. The lake is the centrepiece, with benches dotted around its edge and a nature trail winding through the trees. There’s a café for drinks and snacks, plus a playground and room for picnics. Open from 8:00 am to 4:55 pm daily.

Broad Green Bell

This unassuming iron bell on London Road has its own quiet significance. It’s not the sort of place you’d plan a trip around but it’s worth a glance—a physical remnant from the tollgate days, standing quietly as buses and lorries pass by.

Former Croydon Union Workhouse

You’ll find it on Goodman Crescent—a striking red-brick building with a square tower and cupola. Built in the 1880s, it once held over 400 infirmary patients. While you can’t enter, the architecture alone is worth noting, especially if you’re continuing your route toward Morden.

Where It Settles In

For those travelling by car, Thornton Heath offers a practical, low-key stop. Parking is generally manageable across most streets, especially around the parks and shopping strips. The Craft Café on Brigstock Road is a good bet for coffee and a reset. For something more substantial, Afandina serves up Lebanese wraps and grills just off London Road—easy to reach by car with nearby parking. Accommodation leans functional; the Best Western just south of town is a convenient choice for drivers, especially with on-site parking. Airbnb options within the area lean towards short-let flats and private annexes—and if you’re heading back toward Cheam, you’ll pass through a cluster of easy pit stops along the way.
