Carshalton Water Tower & Historic Garden Trust

This restored 18th-century tower on Pound Street offers a rare glimpse into the leisure architecture of Georgian England. During open days (typically on Sundays from April through September), visitors can explore the interior for free, including a guided walk to the Sham Bridge and Hermitage in the garden grounds. Volunteers offer tea and cake for a few pounds—cash only—adding a nostalgic charm to the visit.

Oaks Park

Technically just over the Banstead edge but easy to reach by car, Oaks Park spans rolling hills and wide footpaths. It’s a favourite among walkers and cyclists, with a café offering vegan-friendly ice cream and outdoor seating. The park is open 24 hours, though morning visits tend to be quieter.

The Grove

Wedged between Mill Lane and Carshalton Ponds, The Grove provides a peaceful green space framed by old stone walls and weeping willows. We stopped for a quick rest near the café, where birdsong competed with the splash of the central fountain. Open daily from 7:30 am to 9:30 pm.

Honeywood Museum

Found along Honeywood Walk beside the ponds, this small but engaging museum focuses on local history and domestic life. There are rooms furnished in Edwardian style, interactive displays for children and regular craft events. Entry is free and it’s open Thursday to Saturday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Wilderness Island

A quiet escape from the town centre, Wilderness Island sits between two arms of the River Wandle. The entrance is easy to miss—tucked off Mill Lane—but once inside, it’s all brambles, woodpecker calls and shaded trails. A favourite for nature walks, open access all day.

Queen Mary’s Woodland

This former school playing field has grown into a community-managed woodland off Shorts Road. During our visit, the morning was misty and birdsong echoed in the trees. A popular spot with those based in Cheam, it’s ideal for quiet dog walks or reading under the canopy.

Carshalton Park

Located on Ashcombe Road, this spacious park includes a playground, football pitches and a historical grotto structure. Open 24 hours, it’s often busiest after school hours and on weekend mornings. The stream running through it can become a shallow wading zone for children during warm spells.

Croydon Clock Tower

While driving in from Croydon, we stopped by the Clock Tower on Katharine Street. Part cultural hub, part café hangout, it houses a library and gallery space with changing exhibitions. Open daily from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm.

Museum Of Croydon

Just around the corner from the Clock Tower, this museum takes a modern approach to local history—blending personal stories with multimedia displays. It’s split into two sessions on open days (11:00 am–1:00 pm and 2:00–4:00 pm), making it easy to fit in around other activities.

Park Hill Park

An ideal detour for drivers coming from Morden, Park Hill Park includes tiered gardens, ornamental lawns and a small café selling homemade cakes. Open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, it’s especially peaceful early in the day before the dog walkers arrive.

Coombe Wood Gardens

We planned a stop in Thornton Heath but were drawn instead to these well-kept botanical gardens on the edge of Croydon. With a formal rock garden, quiet trails and a garden café serving generous slices of sponge cake, it’s a treat for anyone needing a slower pace.

Where To Pause And Refuel

Spending a day in Carshalton often involves leisurely strolls through its green spaces, making local cafés and eateries a natural part of the rhythm. Dotty’s Teahouse on the High Street serves classic cream teas and homemade cakes in a vintage-inspired setting. Just around the corner, The Sun pub offers a hearty lunch menu and a quiet garden tucked behind the building—ideal for relaxed afternoons.

Accommodation in Carshalton itself is limited but many visitors from Norbury or Mitcham opt to stay in neighbouring Sutton or Wallington, where budget hotels and family-run guesthouses are more readily available.
