Nearby picnic areas make it especially appealing to families with children or anyone who enjoys the gentle novelty of small trains passing by. A favourite for people in Molesey, the attraction sees repeat visits from locals and day-trippers alike.

Stokes Field

Stokes Field is a small nature reserve located at the top of Bankside Drive in Long Ditton. Open all day, it’s known for its peaceful atmosphere, local wildlife and hilltop views.

During our walk, we spotted several residents out with their dogs and a few cyclists enjoying the open trails. Many visitors from Tolworth head here when they’re looking for a quieter green space.

Albany Reach

Albany Reach sits just off the river, hidden behind leafy lanes, offering open access to the Thames and peaceful views. Many visitors stumble across it unexpectedly and wish they’d brought a book or packed a picnic.

The presence of benches and wide walking areas makes it particularly tranquil during early morning and evening hours. It’s a common side trip for those already exploring Walton On Thames, especially when the water is calm.

Based on Summer Road, GoBoat provides electric boat hire for groups looking to enjoy the river at their own pace. Boats are available between 10:00 am and 8:00 pm, with hours varying slightly depending on the day.

We planned a day trip from Chessington and appreciated the contrast between the busy main roads and the calm flow of the Thames—it’s an easy way to see the village from a different angle.

Queen’s Promenade

Just beyond the boundary with Kingston, Queen’s Promenade stretches along the river, offering a wide footpath, boat moorings and room for walkers and cyclists alike. It has a balance of activity and calm that keeps it feeling friendly but never too crowded.

Open 24 hours a day, it’s a great choice for early walks or a casual wander after lunch. Those visiting from Hampton often stop here on their way through the area.

Ditton Reach Open Space

Though it looks modest on the map, Ditton Reach Open Space is a quiet park well appreciated by locals. Open daily from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, it’s especially lovely in spring when wildflowers bloom along the edges of the footpaths.

On occasion, we’ve seen yoga classes or small family gatherings taking place here—it’s a laid-back green pocket that feels tucked away from the main roads.

Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Church

Situated on Hampton Court Way, this small Catholic church is appreciated for its simple architecture and calm, reverent interior. While it’s an active parish, visitors are welcome during open hours.

The church’s interior is understated, with soft natural light and a peaceful ambience that makes it feel like a quiet place to reflect or pause.

Thames Ditton Island

Thames Ditton Island is one of the village’s most unusual features—reachable via a pedestrian bridge from Summer Road. While not a typical tourist site, it’s home to a small number of riverside homes with a distinct, secluded feel.

Exploring the island offers a sense of what life might be like on a small stretch of the Thames and it makes for a pleasant detour while wandering the village’s riverside streets.

Lynwood Road Recreation Ground

This compact park off Lynwood Road is a local staple, used by dog walkers, football players and residents looking for a sunny bench.

Despite its size, it has a vibrant community feel. During our visit, we ended up joining a frisbee game with a passing family—it’s that kind of place.

Dittons Library

Located in Mercer Close, Dittons Library is open weekdays from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm and serves as more than just a place for books. It’s a hub of local life, offering free parking and an excellent selection of titles for all ages.

We only planned a short browse but ended up staying much longer, chatting with a volunteer about Thames Ditton’s history and current events.

The town offers a straightforward, welcoming atmosphere when it comes to food and places to rest. Independent cafés and well-established spots line the High Street and Summer Road, serving up pastries, coffee and hearty pub lunches.

The Foundry Bar & Kitchen, recently opened on the former Red Lion site, brings a casual bistro feel and a menu built around quality ingredients.

For overnight stays, The Albert Arms in nearby Esher provides cosy rooms just a short drive away. Whether you need a place to refuel or wind down, Thames Ditton makes it easy to settle in.
