What To Do In Molesey
Set beside the River Thames in north-west Surrey, Molesey blends open green spaces with royal heritage in a laid-back, residential setting with around 19 thousand people living there. The A3050 runs through the town, with the A3 nearby—making it an easy and practical stop for those exploring Surrey by car.
The climate stays mild throughout the year, with regular showers and brighter spells in summer. A waterproof jacket and sturdy shoes are worth packing, especially if you’re planning outdoor stops. With attractions nearby in Hampton and Hampton Court, Molesey offers a peaceful base for drivers taking their time through this part of Surrey.
Attractions In Molesey
With its riverside charm and royal links, Molesey reveals itself gradually. If you’re travelling by car, it’s easy to move between peaceful green spaces and history-rich landmarks without worrying about crowds or long walks.
Hampton Court Palace
We began our day at Hampton Court Palace, just beyond the edge of Molesey and it didn’t disappoint. Driving in along Hampton Court Way, we found well-marked parking and an easy walk straight into the palace grounds.
From the first glimpse of its red-brick façade, the scale is striking—and once inside, it’s easy to lose time wandering through vast courtyards, Tudor kitchens and baroque state apartments. Even if you’re just passing through on a heritage trail, it’s worth stopping here for at least a couple of hours. It’s also a common detour for those heading from Thames Ditton.
The Magic Garden
While still inside the palace grounds, we followed signs to the Magic Garden—a playful, creative space designed with children in mind. That said, we saw plenty of grown-ups enjoying the grassy mounds and dragon sculptures just as much.
It’s especially handy for families with a car, as the garden is close to main car parks and offers a fun break from traditional sightseeing. The play area is open daily (except Fridays), from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm.
Hampton Court Maze
The Maze is tucked into the eastern end of the grounds and makes for a light-hearted side trip. It took us longer than expected—the turns are more confusing than they look from above.
Driving in from Esher? This is an ideal first stop, especially if you’re planning a half-day visit around the palace estate. Open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Molesey Heath
Later, we turned off Approach Road and pulled in beside Molesey Heath. It’s not the kind of place you find by accident—more of a local secret with winding paths, rough meadows and wide skies.
It’s perfect if you’re looking to break up a drive with a peaceful walk. We passed a few dog walkers and families, all spread out on the quieter trails. Parking is casual but available. No signs or visitor centre—just space. A favourite among those from Hersham who know where to go.
Diana Fountain, Bushy Park
As the afternoon light shifted, we made our way to Bushy Park, just a short drive towards Hampton Wick. At the centre stands the Diana Fountain, framed by tree-lined avenues and a wide circular pond.
There’s something regal about the place, even though it’s free and open daily from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm. On-site parking is plentiful and we took our time before heading back towards Walton On Thames.
The Fountain Gallery
Back over the bridge, we stopped by The Fountain Gallery on Bridge Road—a small co-operative space showcasing art from local creators. We didn’t expect to stay long but the variety of work and the easy atmosphere kept us browsing.
It’s open Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Metered parking is right outside. Regulars from Surbiton pop in often and now we see why.
The Great Vine
Tucked behind the palace, past the formal gardens, we nearly missed The Great Vine—and that would’ve been a mistake. Planted in 1768 and still producing fruit, it’s now the largest vine in the world.
If you’re already parked nearby, it only takes a few minutes to walk over and it’s surprisingly atmospheric. Best viewed in summer when the leaves are full and the fruit starts to swell.
Cigarette Island Park
The name raises eyebrows but it refers to an old houseboat that once moored here. Now, Cigarette Island is a wedge of grass and riverside paths at the meeting point of the Thames and the Ember.
Memorial Sundial, Buckingham Gardens
On the other side of town, Buckingham Gardens offers something quieter. The Memorial Sundial stands in a riverside clearing, unassuming but well kept.
We parked along a nearby street (no charge) and sat with takeaway coffee, watching boats drift slowly past. It’s not a major site—but it’s one we remember.
Hurst Meadows
Just off the A3050, we pulled over for a final stop at Hurst Meadows. The grass was long, the dogs were off-lead and the pace was wonderfully slow.
A coffee van and an ice cream seller had set up near the main path—clearly a familiar sight for those in the know. According to one passer-by, locals from Kingston Upon Thames come here when they want to avoid the busier riverside paths.
Stanley Picker Gallery
Before heading home, we made one last visit to the Stanley Picker Gallery in nearby Kingston. It’s part of the university, so the exhibitions lean towards contemporary art—thoughtful, well curated and completely free.
There’s nearby parking and it’s open Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. A quiet but satisfying end to a day spent wandering at our own pace.
The Hidden Park
The Hidden Park lives up to its name—a clearing, really, with space to sit and nothing to do but enjoy the quiet. No signs, no swings. Just space.
Stopping For A Bite Or Staying The Night
By evening, we were ready to slow things down. Molesey has the kind of unhurried feel that suits a takeaway by the river or a peaceful overnight stay.
Molesey Fish Bar, located on Walton Road in Molesey, served us a classic portion of fish and chips—fresh, quick and generous. For coffee or a bite earlier in the day, there are a few small cafés dotted along Walton Road, though you may want to head towards Bridge Road in Molesey for more variety.
Accommodation is limited within Molesey itself but just five minutes away, near Hampton Court, you’ll find guesthouses like The Villa and several small hotels. With a hire car, hopping between these nearby spots is effortless—and you’ll never be far from your next stop.
