What To Do In Woking
Woking is a quiet town in Surrey, not far from London – where 104,000 people reside. It’s easy to reach by car, with the M25 and A3 nearby and plenty of country roads winding through. The weather stays fairly mild, with warm summers and cool winters. A waterproof coat and comfy shoes are good to bring, especially if you plan to explore outdoors. Spring and early autumn are great times to visit, when everything is green and the air is fresh.
There’s a relaxed feel to Woking, with green spaces, local art and small history spots all close together. It’s known for the UK’s first mosque and has links to H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds. We planned a day trip from Ripley and met a few families who had popped over from West Byfleet to enjoy the parks and museums.
Attractions In Woking
Woking is a good place to take things slow. You can walk around without needing a set plan and there’s a nice mix of places to explore like art galleries, quiet nature spots, small museums and a few historic buildings.
RHS Garden Wisley
Just outside Woking, this large and colourful garden is a peaceful place to explore. We wandered through flowerbeds and greenhouses and grabbed a snack at the café. You’ll find this especially appealing if you’re staying near Addlestone, as it’s just a short drive away. Open daily from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.
Brooklands Museum
Brooklands is a great spot for anyone who likes cars, planes or old machinery. We saw everything from racing cars to a Concorde jet and chatted with volunteers about its history. It’s a common side trip for those already exploring West End and it’s open every day from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
London Bus Museum
Next to Brooklands, this museum shows the journey of buses through the years. We hopped aboard a few of them and read about how transport used to work. It opens at 11:00 am on Mondays and 10:00 am the rest of the week, closing at 4:00 pm daily.
Shah Jahan Mosque
This beautiful mosque, tucked along Oriental Road, is the first of its kind in the UK. On our visit, we saw people taking photos of its design and reading the plaques about its history. It’s often recommended by folks based in Chertsey as a quiet, meaningful place to stop by.
The Lightbox Gallery
The Lightbox is a mix of art, history and a cosy café. We went in without much of a plan and ended up enjoying the local history display just as much as the art. It’s open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Tuesday to Saturday and until 4:00 pm on Sundays.
Horsell Common
This wide, open space is brilliant for walking or cycling. With woods, sandy paths and lots of space, it’s a peaceful place to unwind. On our way over from Bagshot, we decided to take a detour and walk a loop through the trees. It’s open all day and night.
Brookwood Cemetery
Brookwood is full of history, with quiet paths and beautiful headstones. We took our time reading some of the older inscriptions and enjoyed the peaceful setting. It’s open daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
WWF Living Planet Centre
This modern building is both a workplace and a visitor space for the WWF. We dropped in during the afternoon and spent time looking at the nature exhibits. Families with kids seemed to enjoy the hands-on parts too. The centre is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Brookwood Country Park
Located near Knaphill, this park is great for gentle walks, open grass and the canal path. While nearby in Lightwater, we decided to take a short drive over and stretch our legs. It’s open all the time and easy to navigate.
Woking Palace
Hidden near Pyrford, these ruins of a Tudor site are quiet and surrounded by countryside. We stopped here before heading back to Guildford and brought a few snacks to enjoy in the open field. It’s always open and rarely busy.
