Farnborough Air Sciences Trust Museum

Approaching from Frimley, this was an easy first stop. Housed in Trenchard House on Farnborough Road, the museum showcases aviation history with real aircraft, flight simulators and artefacts from Farnborough’s pioneering aviation legacy. Free entry makes it an accessible visit and the gift shop and upstairs coffee spot round it out nicely. Open weekends, 10am–4pm.

Fleet Pond Nature Reserve

A popular option with those based in Camberley, Fleet Pond is the largest freshwater lake in Hampshire and only a short drive from Ash. Its circular walk weaves through reeds, woodland and open water views. With free parking and picnic benches near Wellington Avenue, it’s a peaceful escape that feels a world away from the nearby A roads.

Aldershot Park

Just off Guildford Road, this spacious local park in Aldershot has a bit of everything—woodland edges, a duck pond loop and fields where kids can run freely. We planned a morning outing from Badshot Lea and ended up staying longer than expected. It’s open 24 hours, so it works well for a spontaneous stroll or sunset walk.

Wanborough Great Barn

Tucked within easy reach of Woking, this enormous medieval tithe barn offers a rare glimpse into 14th-century architecture. Inside, the exposed beams and timberwork still hold the scent of age-old oak. While it’s not always open to the public, when it is, it’s a truly immersive step back in time—especially when combined with a visit to nearby Wanborough Manor.

Tice’s Meadow Nature Reserve

For wildlife enthusiasts, Tice’s Meadow on Badshot Lea Road delivers. The reserve is home to more than 190 bird species and its network of unpaved trails gives a rugged edge to your afternoon walk. During a visit to Lightwater, we found time to double back here for a quiet, early evening lap of the wetlands. Open year-round.

Brickfields Country Park

Just off Boxalls Lane, this small but thoughtfully maintained park in Aldershot is perfect for dog walking or catching a bit of shade on a warm day. You’ll find a pond, quiet tree-lined paths and benches tucked among the greenery. This spot draws a lot of interest from people in West End, especially for weekend visits.

Rowhill Nature Reserve

A hidden gem up Cranmore Lane, Rowhill offers a network of trails through thick woodland and open glades. We nearly missed the sign for this one—it’s easy to walk past—but once inside, it feels like a pocket of rural peace. Look out for wooden carvings dotted along the paths. Open 24 hours and worth bringing walking shoes if the weather’s been wet.

Caesar’s Camp

This Iron Age hillfort, nestled in the Rushmoor District, provides panoramic views over the Surrey-Hampshire border. The climb is gentle but steady and the top offers a rewarding vista, especially on clear days. While driving in from Guildford, we decided to detour here and were glad we did—the wild heather and quiet stillness were striking.

Mother Ludlam’s Cave

Off Moor Park near Farnham, this unusual cave blends myth and natural curiosity. Linked to tales of a benevolent witch, it’s a brief stop that adds a little local folklore to your trip. Easily accessible on foot and the riverside walk to reach it is half the experience.

Wanborough Manor

Often overlooked but historically rich, Wanborough Manor played a key role during WWII as a training centre for the Special Operations Executive. It’s a private residence now but even from the outside, the house and grounds carry the atmosphere of secrets once kept. For those with a taste for hidden history, it’s a quiet nod to the town’s deeper roots.

Food, Sleep And The Slower Pace

Time in Ash moves a little slower and that’s part of the appeal. You’ll find a handful of independent cafés along Ash Street and close to Ash Vale, many serving simple lunches or takeaway coffee—The Beehive Café is a reliable local spot with fresh cakes. For dinner, Pizzeria Campana offers authentic Neapolitan slices and if you’re staying overnight, the Premier Inn Aldershot delivers budget-friendly comfort within a short drive. It’s not flashy but that’s the point—Ash doesn’t rush and neither should you.
