The park runs alongside the River Thames and is well maintained, with clean roads and lush green spaces. We saw squirrels and even lime green parrots fluttering through the trees, which made the excursion feel unexpectedly wonderful. The Peace Pagoda provides a peaceful environment for reflection. This park, located a short distance from Vauxhall, combines tranquillity and beauty in a way that draws visitors back.

Stockwell Memorial Gardens

Stockwell Memorial Gardens is more than just a park – it’s a location intertwined with memories and community history. A three-sided panel near the entry tells the story of the First World War, including the 574 local men killed and the imposing Portland stone tower honours them all. A mural painted with the cooperation of local youngsters adds colour to the area and a sculpture of a Caribbean woman — the first of her kind in England — instils a strong sense of ethnic pride. It’s a peaceful, respectful space to reflect.

Stockwell War Memorial

Located at a busy intersection, the Stockwell War Memorial provides surprising historical depth. Under it is one of the ancient Northern Line shelters, which was utilised during WWII and later as accommodation for members of the Windrush generation. Its multilayered history is conveyed through on-site panels, making even a brief visit worthwhile.

Rosery Gardens

Rosery Gardens, found just beyond the boundaries of Stockwell, provides a pleasant respite from the hustle and bustle of metropolitan life. This small garden space is well-kept and quietly charming, making it suitable for short walks or periods of introspection under the trees. We liked how the planting design invites you to calm down, with tucked-away benches, twisting walks and an unexpected sense of isolation despite its central location. Rosery Gardens, despite its small size, is a soothing environment that can brighten any day.

Larkhall Park

Larkhall Park stands out as one of Stockwell’s larger playgrounds for both locals and families. We passed swings, slides and climbing frames crowded with youngsters and the entire area had a welcoming, casual atmosphere. While a few places appeared to need some work (one of the baby swings had clearly seen better days), the park remained a terrific place for the kids to burn off energy. It’s the type of location that fits seamlessly into a morning or afternoon routine, as it’s open all day.

Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens

Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, a short walk from central Stockwell, offers a mix of whimsical green space and casual activity. We saw squirrels brave enough to accept treats, well-kept tennis courts and a bustling café with courteous workers who appeared to know most customers by name. It’s close to both Stockwell and South Bank, making it a convenient detour for those already visiting surrounding sites. Whether you want a peaceful sit-down or a fast stroll with the kids, it’s a popular spot that knows how to make you feel welcome.

Slade Gardens

Slade Gardens is one of the few places in Stockwell where the pace of life noticeably slows. We came early and discovered families already setting in for picnics, aided by pleasant faces and a relaxed atmosphere. The space has a warm and friendly feel, with plenty of cover, open grass and play equipment to accommodate practically any visit. It is open daily from 7:30 AM to 6:30 PM and is the type of park where talks can last for hours and no one is in a hurry to leave.

Battersea Power Station

When we visited Battersea Power Station, we weren’t expecting such a remarkable blend of past and current – yet that contrast is just what makes it so intriguing. Historic industrial architecture is now home to a mix of trendy shops, riverside eateries and cultural institutions, all arranged around wide public pathways. Sunsets here are spectacular, especially from the water’s edge. The location is close enough to Waterloo for a fast visit but there’s plenty here to merit staying longer. Open from 10 AM to 8 PM most days (from 12 PM on Sundays), it’s a place to explore, shop or just take in the growing city skyline.

Stockwell Hall Of Fame

The Stockwell Hall of Fame, hidden beneath a basketball court on Aytoun Road, serves as a changing display of urban inventiveness. We observed painters in the middle of the process, spray cans in hand, adding new work over murals that had only been up for a few days. The ever-changing display ensures that no two visits are same and some of the items are comparable to those found in recognised galleries. It’s one of Stockwell’s most vibrant areas, raw, expressive and ever-changing.

Tate Britain

If you happen to be in the Millbank area, Tate Britain is a must-see for art lovers. We went through rooms packed with vibrant pre-Raphaelite paintings, Turner’s dramatic landscapes and Henry Moore sculptures, each gallery offering something unique. The major collection is free to peruse, which makes the experience much more appealing. There’s a relaxing café, a curious gift shop and plenty of photo opportunities. It is open every day from 10 AM to 6 PM and highlights British art without becoming overbearing.

David Bowie’s Birthplace

David Bowie’s childhood home is a modest terraced house on a quiet street in Stockwell. Though not open to the public, the house on Stansfield Road maintains significance for followers of the musician who previously lived there. During his early years, Bowie developed the artistic curiosity that would influence his global career. The building isn’t showy, yet standing in front of it ties you to a very human aspect of an iconic legacy. Simple and unmarked, yet packed with meaning for those who know the story.

The David Bowie Memorial, located just off Tunstall Road near the Brixton Underground station, is easy to spot and even more difficult to forget. We stood with others, gazing up at the now-iconic mural, which depicted Bowie’s face in vibrant colours and was framed by Aladdin Sane’s lightning bolt. Artist Jimmy C created the tribute, which is surrounded with words, flowers and images – a live, dynamic space of remembrance. It’s an appropriate place close to Camberwell, inviting admirers from across the city to connect with Bowie’s roots. It is open at all hours and serves as a passionate focal point for individuals who have been affected by his work and memories.

Lift 109

It’s not every day that you step into a glass lift and ascend 109 metres above the Thames but that’s exactly what Lift 109 provides. This observation deck, located within Battersea Power Station, mixes sleek modern design with a nod to the building’s industrial heritage. Before the ascent, there is an interesting exhibition that details the power station’s role in London’s history, which adds dimension to the trip. As we soared, we were treated to floor-to-ceiling vistas of the Shard, Big Ben and even the London Eye. Sightseers coming from Chelsea like including this stop on their tour, especially with the evening lift hours making it easier to capture the skyline at sunset. It’s a bold and wonderful way to observe the city from a unique perspective. It’s open from 10 AM to 6 PM at the start of the week and on Sundays and until 8 PM from Thursday to Saturday.
