What To Do In Euston

We arrived expecting a transit zone. What we found was a pocket of London full of surprises, stories and places to linger. Set between Bloomsbury and Camden, it’s a central London hub where culture is compact and walking from one highlight to the next is refreshingly simple.

If you’re driving in, the A501 and Euston Road provide direct access. Traffic builds quickly during rush hours, especially on weekdays. With a hired car, the real advantage lies in flexibility. Whether hopping between exhibitions or taking short detours to nearby areas, it’s easy to stay spontaneous without relying on the Tube. Spring and early autumn are ideal times to visit, when parking is easier and the streets feel calmer. Euston isn’t showy but with a bit of patience and a map to hand, it becomes a rewarding base for wider exploration.

Attractions In Euston

Between the station crowds and urban hum, Euston holds a quiet concentration of cultural stops. Museums appear behind unassuming doors, squares open up between office blocks and curiosity is rewarded more than planning.

The British Library

We parked nearby and began the day here and didn’t regret it. The Sir John Ritblat Gallery is free and houses treasures like Magna Carta and handwritten Beatles lyrics. There’s also a great café and shop, ideal for refuelling or browsing between exhibits. Most days, it opens from 9:30am to 8pm.

Wellcome Collection

While driving in from Primrose Hill, we made this our first stop. The Wellcome Collection blends art, medicine and history in quietly fascinating ways. From anatomical models to immersive installations, it’s an easy place to lose a couple of hours. Open 10am to 6pm, Tuesday to Sunday.

Grant Museum Of Zoology

Hidden in the Rockefeller Building just off Gower Street, this small museum feels almost untouched by time. We found on-street parking close by and ducked in for a short visit. Shelves were packed with bones, jars and preserved specimens. It’s compact, dense and full of surprises. Open Tuesday to Friday afternoons and Saturdays from 11am.

Pancras Square

Not everything in Euston needs to be indoors. After a quick lunch nearby, we ended up here. It’s a broad, modern square between King’s Cross and St Pancras, where fountains dance beside cafés and students lounge on the steps.

It’s a public space that works. Always open, always lively and ideal for resetting between stops.

The Postal Museum

A popular option with those based in Aldwych and a fun drive over, the Postal Museum surprised us with its hands-on exhibits and rideable Mail Rail. This is a narrow underground train once used to transport post beneath London.

There’s also an engaging children’s play space and exhibits covering wartime communication and early postcodes. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm.

Foundling Museum

We planned a morning outing from Bloomsbury and found parking close to Brunswick Square. The museum is deeply moving, telling the stories of abandoned children through personal artefacts and portraits. It’s quiet, accessible and ideal for a reflective visit. Open Tuesday to Sunday.

The Wallace Collection

An ideal detour for drivers coming from Kentish Town. Located just outside the congestion zone, the Wallace Collection is housed in Hertford House and features luxurious interiors filled with art, armour and decorative pieces. We easily parked in nearby side streets for a short walk to the entrance. Open daily, 10am to 5pm.

BT Tower

Approaching from Islington, we caught sight of the BT Tower rising above the skyline. Though closed to the public, it’s a striking landmark worth a photo stop and a useful navigational point while driving through Fitzrovia. Plans are underway to convert it into a hotel following its sale in 2024.

Petrie Museum Of Egyptian Archaeology

During a visit to Mornington Crescent, we found nearby meter parking and slipped into the Petrie Museum. It’s a compact space packed with ancient Egyptian and Sudanese artefacts. Ideal for those with a deep interest in archaeology. Open Tuesday to Saturday, with slightly shorter hours on weekdays.

London Transport Museum Depot

We made the journey from Tottenham Court Road to Gunnersbury by car and the route was straightforward even during midday traffic. The depot is filled with vintage buses, Tube stock and signage from decades past.

It’s only open on special dates and isn’t part of the Covent Garden museum’s daily offer. When it is, hours usually run from 10am to 6pm. Set aside a few hours to do it justice.

Where To Pause And Refuel

After a morning on the road and a few hours of exploring, we stopped in at Half Cup on Judd Street. It’s easy to reach from nearby short-stay car parks. Their brunch menu is reliably good, from sourdough stacks to shakshuka and it makes a perfect midday stop. For something heartier, Fatto a Mano near King’s Cross serves authentic Neapolitan pizza with convenient street-side seating.

If you’re staying overnight, The Wesley Euston offers on-site parking and a calm atmosphere. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from the station. Rooms are clean, quiet and ideal for travellers needing a base while exploring central London by car or foot.
