What To Do In Docklands

Docklands stretches along the Thames, a sharp-edged landscape where modern towers rise over old dock basins and river inlets. Spread across former wharves and warehouses, it feels both fast-paced and reflective, depending on where you wander.

Getting here by car is straightforward—whether you’re cruising along the A13 or taking a turn off the A1261. Docklands is one of those places where having a car genuinely opens up the area. You can easily jump between pockets of activity, park near the quieter corners and fit more into a single day than relying on trains.

Weather swings with London’s moods—summers bring warmth off the water, while winters often sharpen the skyline into crisp silhouettes. Springtime softens the edges, when tree-lined walkways start to bloom and outdoor terraces come alive. With nearby riverside spots and East London districts like Whitechapel only a short drive away, Docklands fits naturally into a broader city adventure.

Attractions In Docklands

From rooftop gardens to riverside walks and bold city landmarks, Docklands is stitched with contrasts. Driving gives you the freedom to stop where you want, linger longer and follow the quieter streets most people miss.

Crossrail Place Roof Garden

A popular option with those based in Stratford, Crossrail Place Roof Garden feels almost hidden. Raised above the Elizabeth Line station, it blends tropical planting with sleek design—an unexpected find just a few minutes’ drive from the main commercial heart of Canary Wharf.

We lingered longer than planned, tracing winding pathways through ferns and flowers. Open from 9 am to 9 pm, it’s easiest to park nearby in the underground Canada Place car park and head up on foot. Some evenings feature small music performances, adding even more reason to linger.

One Canada Square

You can’t drive through Docklands without noticing the silver-capped pyramid of One Canada Square. Still one of London’s defining landmarks, it towers over the shopping arcades, public squares and small green parks at its base.

We wandered into the arcade after parking up along Canada Square. If you time it right, parking here is smooth—especially before the evening rush—and it gives you easy access to impromptu food markets and pop-up events.

Jubilee Park

Tucked between Canary Wharf’s towers, Jubilee Park offers an easy breather. With its shady trees, fountains and sculptures, it’s an ideal pause after weaving through Docklands by car.

Approaching from Bow, we swung into one of the nearby car parks early in the morning. At sunrise, you’ll have the place almost to yourself, which feels rare this close to London’s financial heart.

Duck Boey

We nearly missed Duck Boey—a tiny floating sculpture bobbing off Fisherman’s Walk. Parking nearby on weekends was simple and it allowed us to wander at a slower pace, spotting small curiosities like this without worrying about transport schedules.

While driving in from Spitalfields, we made a point of swinging by. Look for it around dusk, when the water and lights turn the whole view dreamlike.

Promenade Canary Wharf

During a visit to Shoreditch, we headed back toward the Promenade, finding convenient on-street parking near Westferry Circus. It made it easy to stroll along the river without doubling back on ourselves.

The Promenade shines at sunset. Restaurants tucked along the walkway get busy, so if you’re driving, it’s worth booking ahead to secure a waterside table before the evening fills up.

West India Quay Promenade

Less polished but full of character, West India Quay Promenade feels like a step back in time. We found good street parking off Hertsmere Road and spent a slow hour exploring the old moorings and cobblestones.

Tucked within easy reach of Bermondsey, it’s an ideal stop if you like your river walks a bit rougher around the edges.

London Museum Docklands

We planned a morning drive over from Bethnal Green and parked at West India Quay for easy access to the London Museum Docklands. Set in a preserved warehouse, it gives a vivid picture of the river’s trading past and Docklands’ evolution.

It’s smart to arrive for opening time (10 am) if you’re driving—the small museum car park fills quickly on weekends but weekdays are quieter. The museum’s café is worth a stop for a good coffee and cake before you hit the next stretch of the day.

Cable Street Mural

For those with a car, Cable Street Mural is a short, simple drive across Docklands’ edges. Parking isn’t plentiful right by the mural but it’s easy enough to find a spot a few streets away and walk in.

This vast, colourful mural captures the defiant spirit of East London’s anti-fascist history. Best seen slowly—a short walk lets you absorb all the slogans and figures stitched across the walls.

Royal Dock Cable Car

We made the short drive to Western Gateway to catch the Royal Dock Cable Car. Parking’s available nearby, which makes it easy to hop on without the usual city-centre stress. For the clearest views upriver, grab a spot on the right-hand side of the cabin. Riding early evening feels especially magical as Canary Wharf and the O2 Arena start to light up.

Up At The O2

Approaching from Greenwich by car, we swung around the Peninsula and parked close to the O2. Booking parking in advance is smart here, especially if you’re aiming for a sunset climb. The climb itself is steady but unforgettable, rising high above the arena roof to stunning Thames views. Wear light layers—even cool days can feel warm once you’re moving.

Docklands: A Place To Stay A While

Having a car around Docklands makes a difference—you’ll slip between glass towers and riverfront cafés, spotting pockets of the city most people miss.

Independent coffee spots like Notes Canary Wharf make a relaxed starting point if you’re planning your day around flexible driving stops. Chai Ki is a brilliant pick for bold flavours and casual dining without the city-centre squeeze.

If you’re staying overnight, Docklands leans toward modern comfort. The Novotel London Canary Wharf offers decent on-site parking and rooftop views that let you end your day with a drink overlooking the city’s sparkling skyline. Parking’s straightforward too, making it easy to come and go at your own pace.
