What To Do In Blackheath

Blackheath, with a population of 27,000, sits where open space meets old London, framed by the edges of Greenwich Park and the wide sweep of the heath itself. Just off the A2 and near Shooters Hill Road, it’s an easy drive with a big-sky welcome—rare so close to the city. We visited in spring, when the breeze moves fast and blossoms appear across the green. While driving in from Lee, it was the quiet openness that stood out most. Tucked within easy reach of Kidbrooke, Blackheath offers room to breathe—and plenty to explore.

Attractions In Blackheath

You’ll notice people pausing in unexpected spots or passing by lost in their own thoughts—yet for all the foot traffic, nothing feels overexposed. Even the busiest corners of Blackheath still leave room for your own discovery.

Millennium Circle

Hidden in plain sight within Greenwich Park, the Millennium Circle feels more like a secret for those who look closely. Embossed markers form a ring of history beneath your feet, marking out events and places of significance.

Open 24 hours, it becomes part of the landscape—something you encounter by walking, not seeking.

Blackheath Bookswap

Tucked along Prince of Wales Road, this community-led gem speaks to Blackheath’s quietly creative character. It’s simple—a shelf, a seat, a few good finds—and yet, we spent far longer browsing than expected.

Greenwich Cherry Blossom

We planned a morning outing from Catford and arrived just in time for the pink wave of spring. The cherry blossoms bloom near the Greenwich Park Car Park South and for a brief season, the trees create a tunnel of petals that stop you in your tracks.

Jubilee Memorial Drinking Fountain

Along the edge of Blackheath itself, this ornate Victorian piece stands in quiet tribute. It’s functional, decorative and easy to overlook—we nearly did. Open access, all hours, with intricate stonework that rewards a second look.

Paper Head Sculpture

Also nestled within Greenwich Park, the paper head sculpture is something you don’t expect until it’s right in front of you. Delicate in concept but commanding in presence, it feels part of a temporary dream.

A popular photo spot, though it draws you in more for thought than for spectacle.

Blackheath

The Heath itself is both backdrop and highlight. Spanning over 200 acres, it invites picnics, kite flying, dog walking or simply lying still and looking up.

We crossed it one evening just before sunset—no plan, just following the light. Accessible any time, it remains the town’s defining space.

Royal Observatory Greenwich

Set along Blackheath Avenue, this scientific and historical site pulls in visitors from all over—including those we met who were coming from Deptford.

With exhibits on astronomy, the Prime Meridian line and clockmaking, it’s a hands-on way to engage with centuries of global navigation. Open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Blackheath Common

Extending into the wider open space beyond the formal parklands, Blackheath Common adds texture to the town’s landscape. Wild, uneven and less curated, it’s a favourite for locals wanting to feel out of London without ever leaving it. You’ll often hear birdsong, bicycle bells and the hum of conversation in the air.

Peter Harrison Planetarium

We dropped by after lunch near Greenwich—just a short walk really—and joined a show about deep space. The planetarium offers a rich visual experience and it’s not just for children. Shows run daily, typically between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm, with a mix of astronomy talks and themed presentations.

National Maritime Museum Gardens

Driving in from Lewisham, we found a surprising patch of order and calm behind the Maritime Museum. The gardens are elegant without being fussy, with shaded benches and open lawns. A good in-between stop if you’re planning more indoorsy sights nearby.

Flamsteed House

Standing within the Royal Museums Greenwich site, Flamsteed House combines architecture, clocks and seafaring history under one roof. The building itself is part of the story—designed by Christopher Wren and holding the first official observatory in Britain. Open daily from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm and best enjoyed with time to spare.

The Fan Museum

During a visit to Greenwich, we made time for this curious little museum on Crooms Hill. Devoted entirely to fans—decorative, ceremonial and practical—it’s a reminder that history comes in many forms. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Migration Museum

Based at Lewisham Shopping Centre, this museum explores the stories of people who have moved across the world and into Britain. We heard children talking about their grandparents’ journeys while standing next to an exhibit on Windrush. A short drive from Eltham and worth visiting when it’s open—typically Friday to Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:30 pm.

Royal Museums Greenwich

This umbrella group includes the Observatory, Cutty Sark and Maritime Museum—all within walking distance. There’s more than a day’s worth of history packed into this corner of London. We saw a family from New Cross tracing sea routes on a giant globe. Open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Where To Pause In Blackheath

Independent cafés cluster around the village centre, with spots like Hand Made Food offering fresh-baked savouries and communal tables that fill up quickly by noon. For something more substantial, Zerodegrees serves craft beer and wood-fired pizza with a view of the heath—ideal for unhurried evenings. If you’re staying over, The Clarendon Hotel offers classic rooms, friendly staff and private parking right behind the green.
