Things To Do In Alfriston For Groups
Alfriston’s a proper little gem tucked away in the Cuckmere Valley. It’s not exactly bustling – you’re looking at about 1000 souls calling it home – but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm. Getting here’s not too tricky; you can take the A27 if you’re coming from Brighton or Eastbourne way. Public transport is a bit hit and miss, mind. There’s no train station, but you can catch a bus from Seaford or Polegate if you’re feeling adventurous. But if you’re going as a group, it’s better to hire a minibus.
Step Back In Time At Alfriston Clergy House
First up, we’ve got the Alfriston Clergy House. This National Trust gaff is a proper slice of history – we’re talking 14th century, folks. It’s got a thatched roof that looks like it’s been there since time began, and a garden that’s prettier than a picture. Arlington locals reckon it’s the bee’s knees for a day out, and they’re not wrong. Inside, you’ll find low ceilings, wonky floors, and enough old-world charm to make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The garden’s a treat too, with an orchard, kitchen garden, and some cracking views of the Cuckmere Valley. Don’t forget to try the homemade cakes in the tea room – they’re proper tasty.
Go Wild At Drusillas Park
If you’ve got little ones in tow (or you’re just young at heart), Drusillas Park is the ticket. It’s a zoo, but not as you know it. They’ve got everything from meerkats to penguins, and a load of rides to boot. The zoo’s got over 100 species, and you can get up close with some of them in the walk-through enclosures. There’s also a Thomas the Tank Engine ride for the little train enthusiasts, and a Go Wild! adventure play area where kids can burn off some energy. If you’re feeling brave, check out the Eden’s Eye maze – it’s proper tricky.
Ramble Around Seven Sisters Country Park
Now, if you’re after some proper scenery, Seven Sisters Country Park is your spot. It’s got chalk cliffs, meandering rivers, and more green than you can shake a stick at. The walk from Newhaven to here is a popular one, if you’re feeling energetic. The park covers over 280 hectares of chalk downland, meandering river valley and chalky cliffs. You can take a canoe trip down the Cuckmere River, or just sit back and watch the world go by. If you’re into birdwatching, bring your binoculars – there are all sorts of feathered friends to spot here.
Cast A Line At Arlington Reservoir
Fancy a bit of peace and quiet? Arlington Reservoir is your best bet. It’s a top spot for fishing or just having a nice stroll if you’re not the angling type. It’s become quite the hotspot for Hailsham residents looking to escape the hustle and bustle. The reservoir is home to a variety of fish, including carp, bream, and roach. Even if you’re not into fishing, the circular walk around the reservoir is lovely – it’s about 2 miles and offers some cracking views of the South Downs. Keep your eyes peeled for the local wildlife too – there’s everything from great crested grebes to dragonflies.
Take In The Views At Birling Gap
Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters is another National Trust beauty. The views here are knockout – all dramatic white cliffs and rolling seas. You can take a stroll along the beach (if the tide’s out), or brave the steps down the cliff face. The visitor centre’s got some interesting exhibits about coastal erosion and local history. If you’re feeling peckish, the cafe does a mean cream tea with views that’ll make your jaw drop.
Visit the Church Of St. Andrew
Right in the heart of Alfriston, you’ve got the Church of St. Andrew. It’s a proper old church, dating back to the 14th century. They call it the ‘Cathedral of the South Downs’, and when you see it, you’ll know why. Lewes history buffs often make the pilgrimage here for a gander. Inside, you’ll find some beautiful stained glass windows and a font that’s older than the church itself. Keep an eye out for the ‘Alfriston Star’ – it’s an old ship’s figurehead that washed up on the beach and now hangs in the church.
Explore Lewes Castle & Museum
Alright, so Lewes Castle isn’t exactly in Alfriston, but it’s worth the trip. This Norman castle’s got views for days and a museum that’ll tell you all about the local history. It’s not uncommon to bump into a coach load from Peacehaven having a day out here. The castle’s got a proper interesting history, dating back to William the Conqueror’s time. You can climb to the top of the keep for some cracking views over Lewes and the surrounding countryside. The museum’s got all sorts of interesting bits and bobs, from prehistoric flints to mediaeval pottery.
So there you have it – plenty to keep you busy in and around Alfriston. Whether you’re into history, nature, or just fancy a nice day out, there’s something for everyone. And if you’re coming from Kingston, it’s not too far at all. Just round up your mates, hire a minibus, and make a day of it!
