Getting there is straightforward. The A30 road connects directly to the town, so hiring a minibus makes the trip easy. There’s also a train station with regular services, and buses run frequently if you prefer public transport.

One of our favourite spots was Cornwall Gold and Tolgus Mill. This unique attraction offers a glimpse into Cornwall’s golden past. We explored the Tolgus Tin Mill, the last working Victorian tin mill in Cornwall, which has been restored to preserve its heritage. It’s a popular destination; groups from Falmouth often come here for a good day out. Watching the machinery in action was fascinating, and we learned how tin ore was processed. There’s also a chance to pan for gold, which was a fun experience for everyone. The site includes a jewellery showroom where skilled craftsmen create beautiful pieces, and a café serving delicious Cornish treats.

Visit the National Trust – East Pool Mine

We also checked out the East Pool Mine, managed by the National Trust. This former tin mine is a significant part of Cornwall’s industrial heritage. Many groups from Penryn choose to visit this attraction. The site features two great beam engines, originally powered by high-pressure steam boilers. The guided tour took us through the engine houses, and we learned about the lives of the miners and the technological advancements of the time. It’s an eye-opening experience that brings history to life.

Check Out the Basset Monument

Hiking up to the Basset Monument on Carn Brea was a highlight. The 90-foot-high granite obelisk is dedicated to Sir Francis Basset, a prominent figure in Cornwall’s mining industry during the 18th century. The walk to the monument is rewarding, offering panoramic views over Redruth and the surrounding countryside. It’s a great spot for photography and soaking in the natural beauty of the area.

Relax at Fairfields Park

We spent a relaxing afternoon at Fairfields Park. This green space is perfect for picnics, games, or just unwinding. Being near Pool, it’s convenient for those coming from nearby areas. The park has open grassy areas, playground equipment for children, and benches where you can sit and enjoy the surroundings.

Stroll Around East End Park

East End Park was another peaceful spot we enjoyed. It’s a smaller park but offers a quiet environment for a leisurely walk. We enjoyed watching local wildlife and taking in the fresh air. Sometimes, groups from St Agnes include this in their itinerary when visiting Redruth. The park is well-maintained, with pathways lined by trees and shrubs.

Discover St Rumon’s Gardens

We found St Rumon’s Gardens to be a hidden gem. This community garden is beautifully kept, featuring a variety of plants and flowers that change with the seasons. Tourists from nearby towns like Helston often make a point to visit this peaceful spot. The tranquil atmosphere makes it an ideal place for reflection or a quiet chat with friends. There’s also some interesting local artwork displayed throughout the garden.

See The Miners’ Hounds Statue

The Miners’ Hounds statue on Fore Street caught our attention. This striking sculpture depicts a miner and his faithful hounds, symbolising the town’s deep connection to its mining past. It’s a popular spot for photos and a reminder of the hard-working people who built the town. When they’re in the area, people from Perranporth frequently visit this spot.

Admire the Tin Miner Statue

Not far away, the Tin Miner Statue is another landmark we checked out. This life-sized bronze statue stands proudly in the town centre, paying tribute to the miners who once worked in the area’s tin mines. The detail on the statue is impressive, capturing the ruggedness and determination of the miners.

If you have more time, consider exploring the Tolgus Trail for a bit of nature or visiting Michell’s Engine House to see more of the mining heritage. Redruth might be small, but it’s packed with interesting places that make for a memorable group trip.
