The museum staff were incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable, offering insights that made the experience even more memorable. If you’re coming from Calne, a visit to the museum is a must for history buffs looking to learn more about the area.

Bowood House & Gardens

Just a short drive from the town centre, Bowood House & Gardens on Old Road is a place that absolutely blew us away. The grandeur of the house and the beauty of the gardens left a lasting impression. We could have easily spent hours wandering through the immaculately landscaped grounds designed by Capability Brown. Bowood is particularly stunning in spring and early summer, with vibrant blooms adding to the atmosphere. If you’re planning a day out between April and November, Bowood is a great option.

John Coles Park

If you’re after a relaxing day in the fresh air, John Coles Park on Fleet Road is an ideal spot. We loved the peaceful atmosphere here, especially with the birds chirping as we enjoyed a cup of coffee from the park café. The kids had a fantastic time playing on the splash pad and playground, while we appreciated the well-maintained grounds. It’s the perfect place to unwind, whether you’re a local or visiting from Corsham, and it also hosts seasonal events, which are always fun to catch.

Lacock Abbey

Lacock Abbey is a treasure trove of history and architectural beauty. Walking through the abbey felt like stepping back in time, especially knowing that parts of it were used as a filming location for Harry Potter. The rich history of the abbey and its grounds fascinated us, and we could easily see why it’s such a popular destination. If you’re travelling from Malmesbury, it’s worth planning a day here to fully take in its historical significance and charm.

Monkton Park

One of our favourite spots for a leisurely afternoon was Monkton Park on Station Hill. We enjoyed strolling along the River Avon, taking in the serene views and the calming sounds of the water. The park provides plenty of open space for a family picnic or for children to run around and play.

Cherhill White Horse

For those who love iconic landmarks, the Cherhill White Horse is a must-see. We hiked up to the top of the hill and were rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. The experience felt like a true adventure, with the added bonus of visiting one of the oldest chalk figures in Wiltshire. It’s a destination we’d recommend to anyone looking for a mix of nature and history, especially if you’re not far from Bradford on Avon.

The Market Cross

In the centre of town, The Market Cross at 1 Market Place caught our attention with its historical significance and charm. We often found ourselves passing by this 16th-century structure during our walks around town. The area surrounding the Market Cross is always bustling, with a mix of shops and cafés, making it a perfect spot to take a break and soak in the local atmosphere. Whether you’re a visitor or a local, it’s an unmissable part of the town’s heritage.

REME Museum

History enthusiasts will love the REME Museum, located on Calne Road. We were fascinated by the interactive exhibits and the extensive collection of military vehicles and equipment. Learning about the history of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers was an engaging experience, and it’s a museum that caters to both adults and children. If you’re in the area or travelling from Trowbridge, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Castle Combe – Water Lane

A short drive from Chippenham, Castle Combe is a picture-perfect village that took our breath away. Strolling through its quaint streets and alongside the serene Water Lane made us feel like we had stepped into another era. Often described as the “prettiest village in England,” Castle Combe certainly lived up to the title during our visit. We spent a peaceful afternoon exploring, and it’s a destination we highly recommend for anyone seeking a quiet escape from the busier towns nearby.

National Trust – Dyrham Park

Located just outside Chippenham, Dyrham Park is a National Trust property that quickly became one of our favourite spots. The grand baroque house, combined with the stunning gardens, made for a perfect day out. We especially loved walking through the grounds, spotting deer and enjoying the views of the surrounding Gloucestershire countryside. It’s an easy trip if you’re coming from Melksham, and we found it to be a peaceful escape from the busier parts of Wiltshire.
