What To Do In Axbridge
Nestled at the foot of the Mendip Hills, Axbridge is a charming historic town with a population of just over 2,000 people. Its medieval streets and historical landmarks offer visitors a rich glimpse into the past, making it a perfect destination for those who love history and nature. Axbridge’s heritage is tied to the wool trade, and its iconic medieval square remains the heart of the town.
For those travelling by car, Axbridge is conveniently located near the A38, with the M5 providing easy access to nearby towns and cities. The weather here is generally mild, but it’s always smart to pack for occasional rain showers. Spring and early autumn offer the most pleasant conditions for exploring the surrounding countryside, making these the ideal times to visit.
Attractions in Axbridge
While small, Axbridge packs a punch when it comes to things to do and see. From natural wonders to historical sites, the town and its surroundings offer something for everyone. One unique feature is the Axbridge Pageant, a spectacular event that takes place every decade. With a cast of 300, it dramatically reenacts over 1,000 years of the town’s history, bringing to life scenes of battles, festivals, and key moments from Axbridge’s past. We were amazed by the sheer scale of this production, and it’s something we highly recommend if you’re lucky enough to be in town during the pageant year. Now, let’s explore some other things you can do in Axbridge and the surrounding areas that make this town a delightful place to visit.
Cheddar Gorge and Caves
A visit to Axbridge wouldn’t be complete without exploring Cheddar Gorge and Caves, one of the most famous natural landmarks in Britain. With its towering limestone cliffs and fascinating caves, this site is absolutely breathtaking. Walking through the gorge, we were struck by the beauty of the towering cliffs, and Gough’s Cave left us in awe with its incredible stalactites and stalagmites. Just a short drive from Cheddar, this iconic spot is perfect for a day of exploring nature. We loved the combination of history and geology in one spot—it’s truly a must-see.
National Trust – King John’s Hunting Lodge
Located in the heart of Axbridge’s medieval square, the National Trust – King John’s Hunting Lodge is a beautifully preserved 16th-century building. Despite its name, there’s no evidence King John ever stayed here, but that doesn’t take away from the charm of this Tudor building. We spent a lovely afternoon exploring the museum, and the history it offers was fascinating. The uneven floors and the timber-framed structure really transported us back in time. A quick drive from Burnham on Sea, this spot is ideal for anyone with a love for history and architecture.
Mendip Hills National Landscape
The Mendip Hills National Landscape is a paradise for nature lovers. As we walked through the hills, we were surrounded by the peaceful beauty of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The trails were perfect for both seasoned hikers and those looking for a relaxing day in nature. It’s a fantastic escape from the busier coastal towns like Weston Super Mare, offering a serene environment where you can truly connect with nature.
Ashton Windmill
For those interested in local history, the Ashton Windmill is a hidden gem just a short distance from Axbridge. We were fascinated by this 18th-century windmill, which has been lovingly restored and now stands as a charming reminder of Somerset’s agricultural past. The surrounding area is peaceful, and the windmill itself offers great photo opportunities. It’s a perfect stop for anyone passing through from Wells or nearby towns.
Gough’s Cave
Part of the larger Cheddar Gorge complex, Gough’s Cave offers an incredible underground experience. Walking through the cave, we couldn’t help but marvel at the intricate stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over thousands of years. The discovery of the 9,000-year-old Cheddar Man here adds an extra layer of historical significance. Located within a scenic drive from Clevedon, Gough’s Cave is one of the most impressive attractions we’ve visited.
National Trust – Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve
For those seeking adventure, the Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve is a must-visit. The trails can be a bit challenging, but the views from the top are worth every step. As we reached the summit, the view over the Somerset Levels was absolutely stunning. It’s just a short drive from Glastonbury, making it an easy addition to a day exploring the area. If you’re looking for something off the beaten path, this is the place to be.
Cliff-Top Walk
The Cliff-Top Walk offers breathtaking views over Cheddar Gorge and the surrounding countryside. We found the walk to be a fantastic way to experience the area’s natural beauty up close. The path is well-marked and suitable for all fitness levels. Less than half an hour from Nailsea, it’s a perfect way to spend a relaxing afternoon outdoors.
The Bishop’s Palace & Gardens
Just a short drive away in the nearby city of Wells is The Bishop’s Palace & Gardens. We thoroughly enjoyed wandering through the stunning gardens, which are beautifully maintained and full of history. The palace itself offers a glimpse into the lives of the Bishops of Bath and Wells over the past 800 years. It’s also easily accessible from Bridgwater, and we found it to be a peaceful and relaxing place to spend the day.
Axbridge may be a small town, but its rich history, stunning natural surroundings, and welcoming community make it an unforgettable destination. Exploring the majestic Cheddar Gorge, walking through centuries of history at King John’s Hunting Lodge, or taking in the views along the Mendip Hills are just a few highlights. We were charmed by the town’s peaceful atmosphere and the variety of activities available, making it the perfect place for a relaxing yet enriching getaway. If you’re planning a trip to Somerset, be sure to experience all that Axbridge has to offer.
