Join us as we delve into the features and benefits of five-door cars.

What Is The Fifth Door?

The Fifth Door

You’re probably wondering why the odd number of doors or how it’s possible for a car to have five doors. Most cars only have four doors (two on each side), but it is different in the case of hatchbacks, estate cars, SUVs, MPVs and similar crossover variants.

What Is An SUV?

Boots in these types of cars are classified as rear doors because they are not separated from the passenger cabin. So, to qualify as a five-door model, the car’s boot door must grant access to the front cab area. This type of trunk, which opens upwards, also features a rear window so that the driver can see since the fifth door covers the whole rear of a car.

Tip: You can pass items directly into the car’s cabin or rear seats through a boot like these.

The Difference Between A 3-, 4- And 5-Door Car

The term ‘door’ refers to how many entry points the car cabin has. In this regard, we differentiate three, four or five-door models.

  • Three-door cars: A three-door car has three entry points. There are two doors in the front that grant entry to the seats, and the boot opening also provides entry to the seats, making it the third door.
  • Four-door cars: A four-door car has four entry points. Two doors in the front for the driver and front passenger and two doors at the back for access to the rear seats. The boot (trunk) is apart from the cabin and grants entry only to itself, usually not having any window.
  • Five-door cars: A five-door car is similar to a four-door model, but it offers extra functionality with an added rear door, known as a hatch. This hatch gives you easy access to the boot space and allows you to transport larger items in the cargo area for greater convenience and versatility.

Two-door cars also exist, with front doors and separated trunks, but it’s the least common type of the mentioned.

The Advantages Of A 5-Door Car

5-Door Car’s Advantages

Here are some of the significant benefits of owning or using a five-door car:

Space

If you’re looking for a car that offers more room and comfort, five-door models should be at the top of your list. With an additional door, they have ample cargo space and overall feel more spacious. Most three-door models have sportier styling and sloping rooflines, which can make rear passengers feel claustrophobic.

Access

The additional door makes loading and unloading easier while offering increased access to the rear seating areas for anyone looking to carry more than one passenger, in comparison to vehicles with just three doors or two.

A sedan with four doors and a boot is not a five-door car because its boot lid isn’t an entryway to the vehicle’s rear seats.

The Disadvantages Of A 5-Door Car

Here are the major cons of five-door cars:

Price

For those looking to purchase a five-door car, it can be worth considering that they may cost a few hundred pounds more than smaller cars with three doors. Door-hatches could also be more prone to impairment than separated trunks, which is additional maintenance.

Luxury cars are mostly four-door types, but there are some prestigious five-door SUVs on the market.

Looks

Another thing to take into account is the look of the car. Five-door cars sacrifice appealing body styles for practicality and convenience. The rear hatch in this vehicle may appear to be crammed into the car’s frame, which affects its aesthetics. Additionally, it is simpler to make cars with only front doors appear sportier and more attractive.

The rear door can make a five-door car difficult to open in tight parking spaces.

Which Type Is The Right For You?

Your individual needs and preferences are the most important factors to consider when selecting a car. For example, three-door hatchbacks offer an energetic style but lack the practicality and space needed to carry multiple people regularly.

A four-door car is more spacious and practical than a three-door car, but its trunk capacity is often smaller and limited, hence you can’t put longer or more objects to extend into the cab area.

A five-door car offers the best features of both four-door cars and cars with three doors. It has enough room for passengers and cargo as well as easy access to the rear and front seats, but some have a problem with its aesthetic appeal.

Frequently Asked Questions

A vehicle with five entry points to the passenger cabin is considered a 5-door car. In addition to the driver’s door, the front passenger door and the two back passenger doors, it has a style of boot that provides entry to the cabin, making it a sort of door as well. The five-door car configuration, praised for better access to storage and passengers, is a popular choice for hatchbacks, estate cars, SUVs, MPVs and crossover vehicles.

To count car doors, you must stand next to the car. Count each door starting at the front of the car. Remember that a rear hatch, a boot opening from which you see and can enter the cab area, counts as an additional door. So, if you count two doors and a hatch like this, it has three doors; with four doors and a hatch is a five-door car.

A hatchback has 5 doors. Most car manufacturers make their hatchbacks with four side doors (two in the front row and two at the back, which open up to the front and rear seats). Then there’s the boot. The boot in a hatchback or any other odd-number car model is an extra door, and it is known as a ‘hatch’ or ‘liftgate’.

A 5-door car is better for a family than a 4-door car because the boot provides better access to the back seats and cargo area and usually has more storage space. Also, cars with five doors tend to be more practical and spacious, which makes them great for anyone who intends to regularly carry multiple people.

The smallest 5-door car is the Kia Rio. The Kia Rio is available as a 5-door hatchback, and the vehicle measures 4.06 metres in length. Other small 5-door cars worth checking out include the Hyundai Accent (4.06 m), Toyota Yaris (4.27 m), Honda Fit (4 m) and Volkswagen Polo (4.37 m).

Conclusion

To answer the question ‘What is a 5-door car?’, we can say that it’s a practical and functional vehicle that has five entry points to the passenger cabin, with a boot design serving as the fifth door. Whether for commuting or transporting a family of four plus luggage, this versatile vehicle makes life easier with its spacious interior and functional design.
