What To Do In Torquay

Torquay – the jewel in the crown of the English Riviera. This seaside town’s got a population of about 65,000, and it’s been pulling in the punters since Victorian times. If you’re driving down, you’ll want to take the A380 off the M5.

Weather-wise, it’s one of the warmest spots in the UK, but don’t go thinking it’s the Costa del Sol or anything. Pack your sunnies and your brolly, just to be on the safe side. Best time to visit? I’d say late spring to early autumn, when the weather’s playing ball and all the attractions are in full swing.

Totnes Castle

Now, Totnes Castle isn’t actually in Torquay, but it’s not far off and it’s well worth a visit. It’s this cracking little Norman castle perched on a hill in Totnes. Folks from Paignton often pop over for a gander. It’s open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM in the summer, and the views from the top of the keep are proper stunning. You can see for miles on a clear day! Berry Pomeroy Castle

Berry Pomeroy Castle’s another one that’s not in Torquay itself, but it’s a must-see if you’re in the area. It’s this atmospheric ruined castle tucked away in a wooded valley. Totnes Museum and Archives is housed in this gorgeous Elizabethan merchant’s house right in the heart of Totnes. It’s chock-full of local history and interesting bits and bobs. Folks from Teignmouth often make a day trip to check it out. Open Monday to Friday, 10:30 AM to 4 PM, it’s a great spot to while away a few hours, especially if the weather’s playing up.

Woodlands Family Theme Park

Now we’re talking! Woodlands Family Theme Park is a proper day out. It’s not far from Torquay, and it’s got something for everyone. People from the Lower Dart Valley reckon it’s one of the best family attractions in the area. They’ve got rides, indoor play areas, animals, and even a falconry centre. Open daily from 10 AM, but closing times vary depending on the season.

South Devon Railway – Staverton Station

The South Devon Railway is a lovely little heritage railway that runs between Buckfastleigh and Totnes. Staverton’s the station in the middle, and it’s like stepping back in time.
