What To Do In Topsham
Topsham is a little gem of a town sitting pretty on the Exe Estuary. It’s not exactly huge, with about 4,000 folks calling it home, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm.
If you’re driving down, you’ll want to take the M5 and then nip off onto the A376. Weather-wise, it’s your typical Devon mix – can be lovely one minute and chucking it down the next, so pack for all seasons, yeah? Best time to pop by? I’d say late spring to early autumn, when the weather’s a bit more reliable and the town’s buzzing with life.

nnywell Farm
Right, first up we’ve got nnywell Farm. Now, I’m not sure if that’s a typo or if it’s meant to be Nnywell Farm, but either way, it’s worth a visit. It’s a proper working farm that’s opened its gates to visitors. Folks from Exeter often bring their kids here for a day out. You can get up close with the animals, maybe even feed a lamb if you’re lucky. They’ve usually got some activities going on, and there’s often a tractor ride which is always a hit with the little ones. Just remember to bring your wellies if it’s been raining!
The Goat Walk
The Goat Walk’s a bit of Topsham history for you. It’s this narrow path that runs along the edge of the estuary, and it’s got some cracking views. People from Exmouth reckon it’s one of the best spots for a sunset stroll. It got its name back in the day when goats used to graze along here. No goats nowadays, mind, but you might spot some wading birds if you’re lucky. It’s a lovely little walk, especially when the tide’s in and the water’s lapping at the path.
RSPB Bowling Green Marsh
If you’re into your birds, you’ll want to check out RSPB Bowling Green Marsh. It’s a wetland reserve that’s home to all sorts of feathered friends. In the winter, you might see flocks of avocets and black-tailed godwits. Even if you’re not a twitcher, it’s a peaceful spot for a wander.
Topsham Millennium Woodland
The Topsham Millennium woodland’s a nice little green space in the heart of the town. It was planted back in 2000 (hence the name) and it’s coming along nicely. Keep an eye out for the wooden sculptures dotted around – they’re pretty cool.
Powderham Castle
Now, Powderham Castle’s a bit of alright if you’re into your history. It’s this massive medieval castle that’s been home to the same family for over 600 years. Folks from Ottery St Mary reckon it’s well worth a visit. You can have a nosey around the castle, wander through the grounds, and they often have events on – everything from food festivals to outdoor concerts. The deer park’s pretty special too – keep your eyes peeled and you might spot some of the resident fallow deer.
Canonteign Falls
Canonteign Falls is a bit of a trek from Topsham, but it’s worth the trip if you’ve got a car. It’s one of the highest waterfalls in England, and it’s proper stunning. There are some lovely walks through the woods, and if you’re feeling energetic, you can climb right up to the top of the falls. The views from up there are something else. They’ve got a nice little café too, for when you need to refuel.
Topsham Recreation Ground
Last but not least, we’ve got Topsham Recreation Ground. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s a good spot if you want to stretch your legs or if you’ve got kids that need to burn off some energy.
