We ended up spending more time here than planned—mostly because every turn offers something new. One moment we were watching geese jostle for breadcrumbs by the lake; the next, we were tucked under an old tree, coffee in hand, people-watching.

The café has its quirks (bring coins) but the views make up for it. You can usually enjoy the park until just before sunset—gates tend to close around 9:30 pm during warmer months.

This place feels like several parks stitched together—some formal, some left wild. We came in after a detour from Crystal Palace and got lost in the best way.

At one end, there’s a grand old mansion and a café that knows its oat milk; at the other, swimmers gathered around a quiet lake. There’s space here—not just to move but to properly exhale. It’s open all hours, which adds to its charm.

There’s something stilling about this space. It’s not just the history—though there’s plenty of that—it’s how thoughtfully it’s laid out.

Modern art installations, handwritten notes and stories that quietly stay with you. You’ll want to plan your visit midweek or on a Saturday—it’s open from half nine until five. We overheard someone from Honor Oak Park say they stop by once a year just to reset. Now we get it.

Cator Park

You don’t need an agenda here. We walked in mid-morning and found parents chatting over coffee flasks while toddlers stomped through leaves.

There’s a stream, some open space and enough benches to sit without scouting. It’s always open and it never feels crowded—perfect for a lazy wander any time of day.

A small patch of grass, a bandstand and a feeling of community. We were passing through from Catford and caught a string duo playing near the flowerbeds.

We didn’t even mean to find this park. But on a tip from a local—who’d just driven in from Lee—we wandered through.

Levels of stonework and lawn open up gradually, with little details tucked in along the path. The gates open early, usually by half seven and close in the evening around 9:30—depending on the season.

Thomas The Tank Engine

No signs, no ticket booth—just Thomas, grinning beside a fence on Upper Elmers End Road. It’s the kind of thing you half-think you imagined.

We doubled back to snap a photo. Always accessible, day or night—though it’s best appreciated in daylight if you want to spot it on your drive.

Beckenham Crocheted Postbox

You could easily miss it—but don’t. Locals near Montreaux Court dress the postbox in seasonal yarn designs. When we visited, it wore a daffodil crown and a knitted bumblebee.

Word is, residents from East Dulwich make regular trips just to see what’s next. It’s always on display, no matter the hour.

Betts Park

One of those places you visit with no expectations and leave feeling lighter. It’s just a park, really—some open lawns, a few old trees, well-kept paths.

But it sits quietly near Anerley and as we drove in from Forest Hill, it gave us the breather we didn’t know we needed. Open all day and night—ideal for a sunset stroll or an early-morning jog.

A Good Place To Slow Down

Beckenham offers a variety of independent cafés and restaurants, particularly around the High Street. Love A Slice is a standout for desserts—tucked among the shops, it’s known for its cheesecakes, waffles and casual atmosphere.

If you’re after a sit-down meal, The Kathmandu Masala brings Indian and Nepalese flavours together on Croydon Road, while Hisar Meze Bar delivers Turkish favourites in a lively, intimate space nearby. Both offer dine-in and takeaway and locals speak highly of the service.

For places to stay, the Beckenham Park Hotel offers clean, straightforward accommodation with parking, while a good number of short-stay flats and homes are available on Airbnb and Vrbo.
