Star Fields

Not many places frame a field with Grade I and II* listed buildings—but Star Fields does. Sandwiched between the Church of St Peter and St Paul and the old manor at New Place, it’s a conservation area that quietly shows off Lingfield’s deep architectural roots.

The Trackside Restaurant was busy but sharp and staff seemed genuinely tuned in. Those coming from Reigate often make a day of it—trackside one moment, woodland walk the next.

Old Crowhurst Brickworks

A break from the polished—this one’s rough-edged and refreshingly so. Hidden behind a hedge on Pikes Lane, the Brickworks site is now a quiet, untamed walking area.

No signs, no bins, no mapped trails. We brought boots and didn’t regret it. Open 24 hours.

Talbot Road Recreation Ground

It’s just a play area and a field—and that’s the charm. Perfect for a breather between bigger stops, this open space sees steady use by local families.

Nothing flashy here but it’s clean, calm and well kept.

Ardenrun Showground

We passed it by on our way in from Warlingham, expecting very little—just sheep and trees.

But come August, this field becomes the epicentre of the Edenbridge & Oxted Show. Agricultural displays, food stalls, crafts and livestock exhibitions give it a whole different energy. Worth checking the schedule before writing it off.

Dormansland Recreation Ground

Here’s where the day slows down again. Set just off Dormansland High Street, this rec ground is big enough to wander, with tennis courts, a solid kids’ area and locals who’ll give you a nod.

We ended the afternoon with a drink at The Old House at Home—a proper Surrey pub, low on fuss and big on comfort. Open 24 hours.

St Peter’s Cross And Jail House Cage With Hollow Oak

You’ll hear the bells before you spot it. This historic cluster sits quietly on Plaistow Street—an ancient stone cross, a tiny jail and a hollow oak that locals claim holds onto its leaves until the last race of the season.

Hedgecourt

Tucked along Copthorne Road and popular with walkers from Smallfield, Hedgecourt offers tranquil woodland and open views across the water.

Edenbrook

Can you call it a footpath if there’s no sign? Edenbrook is more instinctive than mapped—winding trails through Dormansland woods, a bench or two, blackberry bushes in late summer.

Hikers from Caterham often favour this stretch for its quiet and simplicity.

Eden Vale Public Footpath

We planned a stop here after a long morning in Godstone and found more than expected.

Past the stile and over the rise, the path drifts along garden edges and open farmland. At one point we stopped walking just to listen—crows, breeze, nothing else.

No sign, no bench—just a blaze of cowslips along a verge we passed after leaving Leigh.
